The Grand Palais

The Eiffel Tower

It was on the occasion of the 1889 Universal Exhibition, marking the centenary of the French Revolution, that a major competition was launched.

The first shovels were broken on January 28, 1887. On March 31, 1889, the Tower was completed in record time.
